Conditions

These are the conditions this site can compare with your answers or that matter most. The full list is on the official page.

  • Occupation on the skilled occupation list that applies to this visa
  • A suitable skills assessment for your occupation from the assessing authority named for it. It must not be an assessment made for a 485 visa, and it must still be valid (no more than 3 years old) when you are invited
  • An invitation to apply, after you submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect. Reaching 65 points does not guarantee an invitation, and after an invitation you have 60 days to lodge
  • Under 45 years of age
  • Competent English or better
  • Points test score of 65 or more
  • Meet the health and character requirements

Good to know

  • Age is checked when you are invited, not when you submit the Expression of Interest. If you turn 45 before the invitation you will not be invited.
  • The invitation states the points score you must have when your application is assessed, and you must also meet the 65-point pass mark.
  • Only occupations on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List can be used for a 189 invitation (212 occupations in the March 2026 compilation). The list uses ANZSCO 2013 codes, not the ANZSCO 2022 codes of the 482 and 186 lists.
  • The New Zealand stream of the 189 closed to applications from 10 December 2022, and the Hong Kong stream does not use the points test. See the official page for those streams.
  • Application charge (first instalment, from 1 July 2026): AUD 6,135 for the main applicant, AUD 3,070 for each additional applicant aged 18 or over and AUD 1,540 for each under 18; AUD 5,030 for the main applicant with a Pacific-regional passport. An applicant aged 18 or over assessed as lacking functional English also pays a second instalment of AUD 4,885. Use the Visa Pricing Estimator for your own case.
  • A permanent visa lets you travel to and enter Australia for 5 years from the grant. After that, coming back as a permanent resident depends on holding a valid travel facility, such as a Resident Return visa.
