How the points test works

The points test decides who is eligible to be invited for the skilled visas 189, 190 and 491. This guide explains the factors and what the test does not cover.

What is scored

The test adds points for age, English language ability, skilled work experience outside and inside Australia, your highest qualification, and some extras: Australian study, a specialist STEM research qualification, a credentialled community language, a Professional Year, studying in a regional area, your partner’s circumstances, and a nomination or sponsorship.

The calculator on this site lists every table row it uses. Each row shows whether it has been confirmed against the legislation and the fact ledger.

The pass mark is a minimum

Home Affairs states that you will not be invited if you do not score 65 points. The invitation states the points score you must have when your application is assessed, and you must also meet the 65-point pass mark.

Invitations are competitive, so reaching the pass mark does not mean you will be invited.

What the test does not cover

Points are only one condition. You also need an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list, a suitable skills assessment, at least competent English, to be under 45 when invited, to meet health and character requirements, and an invitation after you submit an Expression of Interest.

When you apply you must provide evidence for every claim. Claims you cannot evidence can lower your score.
