Conditions

These are the conditions this site can compare with your answers or that matter most. The full list is on the official page.

  • Nomination by a state or territory, or sponsorship by an eligible relative in a designated regional area
  • Occupation on the skilled occupation list that applies to this visa
  • A suitable skills assessment for your occupation from the assessing authority named for it. It must not be an assessment made for a 485 visa, and it must still be valid (no more than 3 years old) when you are invited
  • An invitation to apply, after you submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect. Reaching 65 points does not guarantee an invitation, and after an invitation you have 60 days to lodge
  • Under 45 years of age
  • Competent English or better
  • Points test score of 65 or more, including 15 points for nomination or family sponsorship
  • Genuinely intend to live, work and study in a designated regional area
  • Meet the health and character requirements

Good to know

  • This is a provisional visa. After holding a 491 (or 494) for at least 3 years you may be able to apply for the permanent Skilled Regional visa (subclass 191), a separate application that began on 16 November 2022. It needs tax assessment notices for 3 income years showing the taxable income the Minister sets, and compliance with the regional condition.
  • You may live, work and study only in an area that was a designated regional area when the visa was granted, and you must tell Home Affairs within 14 days of changes to your address, email, phone, passport or employer. Regional areas are listed by postcode: the whole of the ACT and Northern Territory and long postcode ranges in other states are included, while most of Greater Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane is not.
  • A family sponsor must be an eligible relative aged 18 or over, for example a parent, sibling, aunt, uncle or first cousin, who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen and usually lives in a designated regional area. State nomination or accepted family sponsorship adds 15 points.
  • A family-sponsored 491 can use only occupations on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List. A state-nominated 491 can also use the Short-term Skilled Occupation List and the Regional Occupation List (77 occupations).
  • Application charge (first instalment, from 1 July 2026): AUD 6,140 for the main applicant, AUD 3,070 for each additional applicant aged 18 or over and AUD 1,535 for each under 18; AUD 5,035 for the main applicant with a Pacific-regional passport. An applicant aged 18 or over assessed as lacking functional English also pays a second instalment of AUD 4,890. Use the Visa Pricing Estimator for your own case.
