Conditions

These are the conditions this site can compare with your answers or that matter most. The full list is on the official page.

  • Under 36 years of age
  • At least 2 academic years of study in Australia; Or, in the Post-Vocational Education Work stream, complete an associate degree, diploma or trade qualification in the 6 months before you apply that is closely related to your nominated skilled occupation, with a skills assessment made in the last 3 years
  • Apply within 6 months of completing your qualification, while you hold an eligible student visa (or held one in the 6 months before you apply). The study must be in registered (CRICOS) courses taught entirely in English
  • Meet the English requirement for the Post-Higher Education Work and Post-Vocational Education Work streams: IELTS average 6.5 with at least 5.5 in each component (PTE Academic 55 overall, TOEFL iBT 81 total), taken within the year before you apply. Hong Kong and British National (Overseas) passport holders have lower scores. Citizens with a passport from Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK or the US do not need a test
  • Show that you applied for an Australian Federal Police check in the 12 months before you apply (the main applicant and each family member aged 16 or over), and keep adequate health insurance from the time you apply (visa condition 8501)
  • Meet the health and character requirements

Good to know

  • You must be 35 or younger when you apply. The limit is under 50 for Hong Kong and British National (Overseas) passport holders and for people who completed a masters by research or a doctorate.
  • There are two open streams, Post-Higher Education Work (usually 2 to 3 years, depending on the qualification) and Post-Vocational Education Work (up to 18 months); Hong Kong and British National (Overseas) passport holders may stay 5 years. You choose one stream when you apply and cannot change it afterwards. The Replacement stream is closed to new applicants.
  • You cannot hold more than 4 Temporary Graduate visas in total. A second Post-Higher Education Work visa generally needs the first to have been granted on study at an institution in a regional area, and that you lived only in a regional area for at least 2 years before applying.
  • Application charge (first instalment, from 1 July 2026): AUD 5,750 for the main applicant, AUD 2,875 for each additional applicant aged 18 or over and AUD 1,450 for each under 18. Lower charges apply to a Post-Higher Education Work applicant who already holds a PHE visa (AUD 2,265) and to Pacific-regional passport holders (AUD 2,360, or AUD 930 for a PHE visa holder in the Post-Higher Education Work stream). There is no second instalment.
  • Plan ahead: a skills assessment made for a 485 visa does not count for the 189, 190, 491 or 186.
  • Holders can work in Australia, and family members who apply together can get a secondary 485 visa. The rules for bringing family are changing, so check Home Affairs for the current position.
