Conditions

These are the conditions this site can compare with your answers or that matter most. The full list is on the official page.

  • Nomination or sponsorship by an approved Australian employer
  • An occupation that fits your stream. Specialist Skills: an occupation in ANZSCO major group 1, 2, 4, 5 or 6 (managers, professionals, community and personal service, clerical and administrative, sales) with earnings at or above the Specialist Skills threshold. Core Skills: an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (456 occupations). Some occupations are ruled out in certain circumstances
  • At least 12 months of work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field in the 5 years before you apply. Full-time, part-time and casual work can add up, and it need not be continuous
  • Pay that meets the income threshold for your stream, not counting non-monetary benefits: AUD 146,576 for Specialist Skills and AUD 79,423 for Core Skills (nominations lodged 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027). The thresholds rise every 1 July, and the one that applies is fixed by the date the nomination is lodged. The employer must also pay at least the annual market salary rate. These tests are not applied when annual earnings will be AUD 250,000 or more
  • A skills assessment is required only for 24 listed occupations: 23 trades (assessed by Trades Recognition Australia, and only for passport holders of the countries listed for each trade) and Program or Project Administrator (VETASSESS, all passports). Exemptions exist, for example if you already hold a 457, TSS or Skills in Demand visa and work in the nominated occupation
  • Pass an approved English test with the minimum score in each of the four components (for example IELTS 5.0 in each), taken no more than 3 years before you give the evidence. Citizens with a passport from Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK or the US, and people with 5 years of full-time English-medium study, are exempt
  • Adequate health insurance for the whole intended stay in Australia (visa condition 8501)
  • Meet the health and character requirements

Good to know

  • The employer must be an approved standard business sponsor (application fee AUD 420) and nominate a specific position (nomination fee AUD 330). Unless exempt, it must have advertised the job in at least two advertisements for at least 4 weeks within the 4 months before lodging the nomination.
  • The employer proposes a stay of 1, 2, 3 or 4 years (up to 5 years for Hong Kong passport holders) and pays a training contribution charge of AUD 1,200 per year of stay if its annual turnover is under AUD 10,000,000, or AUD 1,800 per year otherwise. It cannot pass these costs on to you.
  • You may work only in the nominated occupation and only for the sponsor (or an associated entity), and must start within 90 days. You cannot extend the visa: to keep working for the same employer, the employer lodges a new nomination and you apply for a new visa. If you lose the job you have up to 180 days to find a new employer or arrange to leave.
  • Some holders can later move to a permanent employer-sponsored visa such as the 186 (Temporary Residence Transition stream). That needs at least 2 years on a 457 or 482 visa in the 3 years before applying and 2 years of full-time work for an approved sponsor, and an employer nomination.
  • Application charge (first instalment, from 1 July 2026): AUD 4,015 for the main applicant and for each additional applicant aged 18 or over, and AUD 1,005 for each under 18; AUD 3,290 and AUD 825 with a Pacific-regional passport. There is no second instalment. Use the Visa Pricing Estimator for your own case.
  • Family members can apply as secondary applicants. They do not take the English test, and the work restriction tied to the sponsor’s job (condition 8607) applies only to the primary holder.
