Conditions
These are the conditions this site can compare with your answers or that matter most. The full list is on the official page.
- A written invitation from the Minister, which you can get only after submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI). You then have 60 days, which cannot be extended, to lodge the application online; applications without an invitation are not accepted
- An internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in a profession, a sport, the arts, or academia and research, and you are still prominent in the field. The achievements named in your invitation are the ones you must rely on and evidence in the application. A separate route exists only for people who gave specialised security assistance to the Australian Government
- A completed Form 1000 in which a nominator with a national reputation in your field attests your record. The nominator must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, eligible New Zealand citizen or an Australian organisation, and no fee may be paid to them. An application without the form is not processed
- Be an asset to the Australian community (economic, social or cultural) and show you could find work or become independently established in your field without difficulty. If you are under 18 or 55 or older you must also show exceptional benefit to Australia that is ongoing, sustained and realised shortly after migration
- Meet the health and character requirements, and have no unpaid debt to the Australian Government
Good to know
- An Expression of Interest is not a visa application and does not guarantee an invitation. It cannot be changed after you submit it, it stays in the system for 2 years, and it does not give you a bridging visa. If you miss the 60-day window you must submit a new one.
- Applications are considered in a set order (Ministerial Direction 120, from 25 July 2026): global experts with top international awards first, then people nominated by an expert government agency, then achievers in the tier 1 priority sectors (critical technologies, renewables and low emission technologies, health industries), then tier 2 sectors, then everyone else. A nomination by the NSW or Queensland government is treated as priority two.
- Application charge (first instalment): AUD 6,235 for the main applicant, AUD 3,120 for each additional applicant aged 18 or over and AUD 1,560 for each under 18; AUD 5,110 for the main applicant with a Pacific-regional passport. An applicant aged 18 or over assessed as lacking functional English pays a second instalment of AUD 4,890. The charge is not refunded if the visa is refused. Home Affairs charges nothing to process a nomination.
- This is the former Global Talent visa under a new name. Global Talent applications closed on 6 December 2024, the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy route no longer exists, and an invitation is now required. The Global Talent Employer Sponsored program is a different route through the 482.
- The Talent and Innovation category, which includes this visa, has a planning level of 3,500 places for 2026-27, down from 5,300 in both 2024-25 and 2025-26.
- A permanent visa lets you travel to and enter Australia for 5 years from the grant. After that, coming back as a permanent resident depends on holding a valid travel facility, such as a Resident Return visa.
