Conditions

These are the conditions this site can compare with your answers or that matter most. The full list is on the official page.

  • Offer of a place in a registered course (CRICOS)
  • Meet the Genuine Student requirement: show that you are a genuine applicant for entry and stay as a student. You answer the questions in the online visa form in English, with at most 150 words per answer, and wanting to apply for permanent residence later does not count against you
  • Show English proficiency unless you are exempt: IELTS 6.0 (5.5 with at least 10 weeks of ELICOS or a foundation program, 5.0 with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS), taken in the 2 years before you apply. Equivalent PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT scores apply. Citizens with a passport from Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK or the US, and students whose only course is ELICOS, a school course or a postgraduate research course, are exempt
  • Genuine access to enough money. For a stay of 12 months or more, show AUD 29,710 a year for living costs plus travel costs and your first 12 months of course fees (less amounts already paid). Add AUD 10,394 a year for a spouse or partner and AUD 4,449 a year for each child, and AUD 13,502 a year for school costs of a school-age child. As an alternative, show official documents proving a parent or spouse earns at least AUD 87,856 a year (AUD 102,500 if a family member also applies)
  • Adequate health insurance for your whole stay, in practice Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). Your visa length is tied to the OSHC period, which must cover at least the length of your course
  • Meet the health and character requirements

Good to know

  • You may work up to 48 hours a fortnight (a 14-day period starting on a Monday) while your course is in session. The limit does not apply to work that is a requirement of the course, or to masters by research and doctoral students once they have started. You may not work before your course starts, unless a visa you held when you applied already allowed work.
  • Length of stay follows your course and health cover and generally will not exceed 6 years. A course of 10 months or longer that ends in November or December usually gets a visa to 15 March of the following year.
  • Since 2 October 2026 you cannot include a partner or children in a Student visa application unless an exemption applies (for example PhD students, students sponsored by Foreign Affairs or Defence, foreign government scholarship holders, and students from Pacific and ASEAN countries), and family members cannot be added after the visa is granted. Holders of most visas in Australia, including 485, 482, 417, 462 and 600, must apply from outside Australia, with limited exemptions for current Student visa holders.
  • Application charge (first instalment, from 1 July 2026): AUD 2,500 for the main applicant, AUD 1,530 for each additional applicant aged 18 or over and AUD 500 for each under 18. It is AUD 2,050 for the main applicant with a passport from one of ten ASEAN countries and for ELICOS or non-award applicants, and AUD 745 for the main applicant with a Pacific-regional passport. There is no second instalment.
  • If you will be under 18 at any time in Australia, you must lodge evidence of accommodation, support and welfare arrangements with the application. A school student must be at least 6 years old when applying.

Sources disagree: Study Australia says family cannot be added after grant with no exemptions, but Migration Regulations Sch 1 item 1222(3)(da)(ii)-(v) (2 Oct 2026 compilation) still allow a secondary application in Australia for family already holding a student visa, or a child born in Australia to a primary holder.
