  • An occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (216 occupations) or the Regional Occupation List (434 occupations) in the 494 occupation instrument, which uses ANZSCO 2013 codes
  • A suitable skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority, not one made for a 485 visa, that is still valid or no older than 3 years (unless you held a 457 or 482 in that occupation that already required one)
  • Both the annual market salary rate and your pay (not counting non-monetary benefits) must reach the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold, AUD 79,423 for nominations lodged 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, unless earnings will be AUD 250,000 or more. Good to know

  • The position must be in a designated regional area with a standard business sponsor that is not an overseas business sponsor, and must be a genuine full-time job likely to exist for at least 5 years, with no clause excluding an extension.
  • After holding a 494 for at least 3 years and meeting its conditions you can apply for the permanent Skilled Regional visa (subclass 191), which also needs tax assessment notices for 3 income years showing the taxable income the Minister sets. A 494 holder cannot use the 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream; the 186 route is Direct Entry or Labour Agreement with a new employer nomination.
  • There is no fee for the nomination. The employer pays a training contribution charge of AUD 3,000 if its annual turnover is under AUD 10,000,000, or AUD 5,000 otherwise. Your application charge (first instalment): AUD 6,140 for the main applicant, AUD 3,070 for each additional applicant aged 18 or over and AUD 1,535 for each under 18 (AUD 5,035 for the main applicant with a Pacific-regional passport). Adults assessed as lacking functional English also pay a second instalment (AUD 9,800 for the main applicant, AUD 4,890 for a family member).
  • You must start work within 90 days and tell Home Affairs within 14 days of changes to your address, email, phone, passport details, or your employer’s address or work location. You may be away from the nominated job for at most 180 consecutive days at a time and 365 days in total.
