What changed
The Government announced the 2026-27 permanent Migration Program on 12 May 2026. It is set at 185,000 places, with roughly a 70:30 split between skilled and family migration. Both the total and the split are unchanged from 2025-26.
Within the total, the Skilled Migration Program gets 132,240 places (about 71 per cent), the Australian Family Program 52,460 places (about 28 per cent) and Special Eligibility 300 places.
The Government prioritises onshore applicants for 2026-27, reserving 129,590 places for migrants already living in Australia plus 300 for Special Eligibility. Budget Paper No. 2 says the 55,110 places left over for offshore applicants will mainly go to high-skilled migrants meeting long-term skill needs.
