Conditions

These are the conditions this site can compare with your answers or that matter most. The full list is on the official page.

  • Intend to stay only temporarily as a genuine visitor, judged partly on how well you kept to the conditions of earlier visas, and have enough means to support yourself during the stay
  • For an ETA (601) or eVisitor (651): a passport on the eligible list (Korean and Japanese passports are on the ETA list; for the UK only British Citizen passports count for the eVisitor). You apply with the Australian ETA app. Otherwise, or if you have a criminal conviction in any country, apply for a Visitor visa (600)
  • Meet the health and character requirements, and have no unpaid debt to the Australian Government

Good to know

  • An ETA lets you enter any number of times while it is valid (the shorter of 12 months and the life of your passport), and an eVisitor does the same within 12 months; you can stay 3 months after each entry. For the Visitor visa (600) the stay period is set case by case: Business Visitor generally up to 3 months, Frequent Traveller 3 months after each entry, and Tourist stream conditions can limit you to 12 months in any 18-month period.
  • A Visitor visa or ETA does not allow work, and working would breach the visa. ETA and eVisitor holders may only carry out business visitor activities, such as attending a conference or dealing with a business contract without being paid by the organiser, and may study or train for no more than 3 months.
  • An ETA has no visa application charge, but the Australian ETA app charges a service fee of AUD 20; an eVisitor is free. A Visitor visa (600) costs AUD 250 from outside Australia and AUD 630 from inside Australia (AUD 205 and AUD 515 with a Pacific-regional passport). The Frequent Traveller stream costs AUD 1,845 (AUD 1,515 with a Pacific-regional passport).
  • The Visitor visa (600) has five streams: Tourist, Sponsored Family, Business Visitor, Approved Destination Status and Frequent Traveller. Family members cannot be added to a 600 application; each person applies separately.
  • New Zealand citizens with a valid New Zealand passport do not apply for a visa beforehand: they are granted a Special Category visa (subclass 444) when they enter Australia.

Penalties

  • Confirmedcompliance-conditions-031

Home Affairs says neither a Visitor visa nor an ETA allows work, so a non-citizen holding either who works in Australia is doing so illegally.

A sponsor whose earlier visitor breached visa conditions may be ineligible to sponsor another visitor in the same visa subclass for 5 years; the Home Affairs sponsored-family page counts the 5 years from the grant of the earlier visa and makes an exception where the overstay was beyond the visitor's control.
